For many newer vehicles, however, there's something owners don't realize until it's too late.

Push-Button Start Changes the Rules

Many modern vehicles with push-button start (also called proximity or smart key systems) allow you to keep the engine running while taking the key fob with you.

The catch?

Once the engine is already running, the vehicle often disables the remote lock and unlock buttons. That's a safety feature designed to prevent someone else from driving away.

If you close the door behind you, the only way back into the vehicle may be with the mechanical emergency key hidden inside your smart key fob.

Many owners have never used it.

Consider Having a Spare Mechanical Key Made
