Recently, a customer contacted Francis' Keys after losing every key to a 2016 BMW X5 eDrive40e.
Several locksmiths avoid these jobs because BMW security systems can require advanced procedures beyond standard key programming.
This particular vehicle had been sitting for well over a year. With no working keys available, restoring access required specialized immobilizer programming techniques and careful handling of the vehicle's electronic security modules.
Why BMW All-Keys-Lost Jobs Are Different
Modern BMWs use sophisticated anti-theft systems designed to make unauthorized key creation extremely difficult. Depending on the model and production year, creating a replacement key may involve direct communication with the vehicle's immobilizer system rather than simply plugging in a scan tool.
For some vehicles, advanced EEPROM programming is required to securely add a new key to the system.

The Result
After completing the programming process, the new key was recognized by the vehicle and the BMW started successfully.
Because the vehicle had been parked for approximately 18 months, it initially produced a significant amount of white smoke on startup. After allowing the engine to run, the smoke gradually cleared, which is not uncommon on an engine that has been sitting for an extended period.
Most importantly, the immobilizer programming was successful, and the vehicle was once again able to start and run under its own power.
